Linen Rug Foundation

now 5 styles available from Forestheart Studio

Our 52" wide linen: looks almost like burlap, and is used the same way. We have several variations of the linens we have carried over the past ten years, scrounging up odd lots of the scarce linen supply. Currently our stock includes natural (a medium taupey color), oyster (a buttery cream bleached) and bleached bright white. The lighter colors are favored by those whose eyes appreciate the easier-to-see contrast of pattern lines on the brighter cloth, or by folks who are not hooking the background. These lighter colors could be dyed too.

By adjusting the spacing of your loops, this linen can be used for a #3 strip (use almost every hole) up to a #8 (skip spaces between every loop). It's ideal for a #6.

$24 per yard; "fat thirds" (about 24" x 26") $8.50

Quantity discounts for bolt lots (50 or more yards)

Our new, extra fine linen is a specialty item: woven about 30 threads to the inch, it is lovely cloth suited for the very finest hooking, with size 3 or even 2 cut strips or fine yarns. This is ideal for use as panels in garments, in sculptural pieces, and for doll house miniatures. 88" wide, it is $45/yard, or a 22" square piece is $8.

Finally here: coarse linen for primitives. This is a more open mesh, suited for size 8 and wider strips and somewhat whiter than may appear below.

60" wide, $25 /yard.

18" x 20" piece $5

Quantity discounts
for 20 yard bolts lots:
$17/yard

To make linen, the flax plant is first thrown into a pond. Whatever doesn't rot is used to spin linen- no wonder it lasts so well! It is also gentler on your arm and hand as you hook. Please consider using linen as your rug foundation. The time and care you spend making your rugs now will be preserved many years by the choice.

The linen situation:

Linen has been hard to get, and it appears it will remain in uncertain supply for the next year (or perhaps much longer). The price has gone up dramatically. I am working to encourage our suppliers to continue to weave the linen that has become so popular; and trying to identify new sources and try new foundation fabrics as I am able to find them. I buy in quantities as large as I can manage to get the best prices.

Forestheart Studio has sold over 12,500 yards of linen!
